On June 23 rd , Chairman Monica David and the Commission's RCR Outreach Team joined Orange County State Legislators, County Commissioners, Circuit and County Judges, staff of the Orange County Supervisor of Elections and Clerk of Court Offices, and Orlando and City Commissioners and their staffs to provide a day of assistance and hope to hundreds of persons in attendance seeking to have their civil rights restored. Chairman David's RCR Outreach team included Clemency Coordinator Janet Keels, Clemency Administration Director Steve Hebert, General Counsel Kim Fluharty, and Jane Tillman of Central Office; and Cocoa Beach Parole Examiner Sandra Jennings.
Area community outreach organizations including ACLU, ACORN, and the NAACP and other volunteers organized and staffed the Saturday event. Former felons and their families and friends were treated to a one day workshop offering a “one stop shopping approach” providing them one-on-one assistance in the following areas: RCR status and eligibility determinations; voter registration; paying restitution costs if owed; discuss record sealing and expungement with judges; get free legal advice from private law firms; and talk with groups offering housing assistance and employment opportunities.
The team will be doing additional workshops in Orlando on July 20 th ; Broward County on the 25 th ; Tallahassee on the 28 th ; and in Miami on August 4 th . To date the team has provided RCR outreach training and assistance to staff of the Florida House and Senate; the 67 State Supervisors of Elections and the Department of State; and the June 23 Orlando event.
